Rectal prolapse is protrusion of rectal mucosa or complete rectal wall through the anal opening. It is commonly seen in elderly patients with chronic history of constipation.
Risk factors being conditions increasing intra abdominal pressure (chronic bronchitis,constipation,BPH, pregnancy),pelvic floor dysfunction,neurological and psychiatric conditions.
Patients present with a mass protruding through anus during straining, fecal incontinence,pain,discharge of mucus or rectal bleeding.
Anal physiological tests like defeacography, manometry, sigmoidoscopy helpful for diagnosis.
Laparoscopic suture fixation rectopexy and resection rectopexy is the treatment of choice. Current studies shows lap suture fixation rectopexy show comaparable results to open procedures.
