Spleenectomy (Disease of the spleen)

Spleenectomy 
Spleen is themost vascular organ in the body. It is involved in producing protective humoral antibodies,protection of B and T cells and plasma cells,acts as reservoir of blood and removes unwanted particulate matter(bacteria).Process of removal of spleen from the body is termed as spleenectomy.

Indications of spleenectomy are trauma,hyperspleenism (idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura,hereditary spherocytosis),neoplasia(lymphomas),splenic cysts.

Laparoscopy is the preferred procedure in elective surgical settings. Most important pre requisite is pneumococcal,influenza and meningococcal vaccination to prevent overwhelming post spleenectomy infection (OPSI).
