COVID Fight

Rising to the Call: Dr. Lakdawala’s COVID-19 Leadership

The COVID-19 pandemic created an unprecedented public health emergency across India, with Maharashtra—and Mumbai in particular—bearing the heaviest burden of cases, fatalities, and systemic strain. Hospitals were overwhelmed, resources were stretched, and the city’s healthcare infrastructure was forced to adapt at a scale never seen before. In the midst of this crisis, Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala stepped away from his regular surgical practice to serve on the front lines, applying his leadership, clinical expertise, and organizational capability to support lifesaving interventions. His decision to pause his career and devote himself fully to humanitarian service stands as a defining example of medical responsibility and compassion during one of the nation’s most challenging periods.

NSCI Dome: A COVID Lifeline

During the peak of the COVID-19 crisis, Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala played a pivotal role in establishing one of Mumbai’s largest and fastest operationalized COVID care facilities at the NSCI Dome in Worli. Working in close coordination with the BMC and a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, administrators, and volunteers, he helped convert the sports arena into a fully functional medical centre equipped for isolation, treatment, and patient monitoring. His leadership was instrumental in mobilising resources, streamlining clinical workflows, and ensuring that the facility could manage large volumes of patients efficiently and safely during a period of overwhelming public-health demand.
